SCOTT SADLER

Scott Sadler is a self-taught artist who mainly works from his home studio but also likes to sketch outside, on the go as often as possible. A Postman by day, he finds inspiration in the industrial architecture and Landscape where he works in Rossendale, while also looking to the more varied architecture of Manchester where he grew up. When Scott isn’t painting or delivering mail, he will be with his family or exploring mountain ranges, usually with a sketchbook and pen close to hand.

“Each of Scott’s unique architectural illustrations, while immediately recognisable, are illustrated with movement and colour in a way that injects new life into the very historical monuments I write about.

“Scott will be an ongoing contributor to the Local Legend Series of books. Prints of the images seen in the series may be ordered directly from Scott.”

PETER CRABTREE

“Peter Crabtree's monumental work on his family name is therefore a timely reminder of the revolution I mentioned earlier. He takes nothing for granted, but follows up every clue assiduously and evaluates the possibilities and probabilities with great care. Eventually we are taken back to Bradford and Sowerby in the 1300s, long before Crabtree was a prolific name, and then slowly and carefully the picture of its ramification and distribution unfolds, taking us from the Calder Valley over into Lancashire and then further afield, through neighbouring counties and even overseas. Supporting the genealogical work is research into the social and economic background of his ancestors, illustrated where possible with reference to wills and other documents. He has also taken the trouble to familiarise himself with the distinctive character of the Calder Valley landscape, and that is the significant background to his unfolding story. His book may not be the last word on the subject of the surname Crabtree but it is a very substantial, thoughtful, and well researched piece of family history. It demonstrates the extent to which the subject has changed over the last forty years and I hope that it will inspire not only other Crabtree descendants but genealogists more generally. It moves us well away from the more traditional compilation of relationships and family photographs.”
